I found it hard to find a good example of a Christmas sack to make for my daughter for her first Christmas. I’d seen lots that were just red with a drawstring but I wanted to make something nicer than that so my husband went with me into Spotlight to get some ideas. We found a tartan Christmas fabric that we really liked and decided to buy some fake fur to put around the top. I don’t know how that will last over time but I can always replace it. It was only about $1.50 worth of fur! The material was a bit more expensive at $17.95 per metre but I had heaps left over to make more Christmas things at a later date. I was so nervous sewing it all together as I didn’t want to waste any of the lovely fabric and was unsure how the fur was going to go on the sewing machine as it is so stretchy. It all went perfectly however and I couldn’t believe how well my first major project on the sewing machine went. I chose some lettering that I liked from Microsoft Word and printed it out to make a pattern. This worked really well and after buying $2 worth of white felt to cut it out of I was rapt with the result. I can’t wait to make something else now. Although it’s coming up to the wrong time of year, I’m going to make a snakey thing to stop the draft for the door in the lounge. With baby Piper on the floor all the time we’ve really noticed what a chill comes under the little gap.
Yahoo – finished at last!!!
It took 2 solid hours yesterday, but when the end was in sight I just couldn’t stop! After working on this for nearly a year I can’t believe that it’s finally finished. I was surprised at how big it seemed after I took it off the sewing frame. It’s going to look fantastic in the baby room. I’ve tried ironing it as it has the crease marks in the fabric from where it was folded in the packet. Ironing has just made it seem more pronounced at this stage though. I’m going to try again today with a bit more steam and see if that works but I’m nervous about it as I’m not sure of the colour-fastness of the threads and my iron often suddenly decides to spurt out dollops of water. Fingers crossed that I can get them out. We are heading into the framers today to drop it off. They’ve quoted me $100 to stretch, stitch and frame it. That might help the crease marks too hopefully. Can’t wait to see the final product!!!
My current project – a birth sampler
I am currently working hard on creating a sampler for the birth of our baby. It’s nearly finished and hopefully will be off to the framers in a couple of weeks max. It was a great bargain sale item from The Fox Collection. It’s not often that you can buy pattern, threads and fabrics all delivered for under $20! This is the picture that came on the packet. The colours that they sent with it are a little bit different so I will upload the finished product. Hopefully that will be in the next few weeks – not too much more to finish off! I’ve been working on it for nearly a year now, it’s something that I’ve just pottered away at. However I’m determined to get it finished so that I can tackle a new project. Christmas is approaching fast and I want to make a Santa sack next for baby Piper.

I’ve always loved making things and becoming a primary school teacher five years ago has let me indulge this side of my life while getting paid for it! I’m at home with our young baby now and have a bit more time on my hands to pursue my crafting hobbies. Thank goodness for two hour naps! My Mum was a keen crafter and instilled a love of cross stitch in us from a young age. I really enjoy dabbling in all sorts of different craft. I’ve even recently bought a sewing machine and am trying to learn to use it.
